It was proposed upgrade the existing sewer network in the town of Mountcharles in County Donegal under the overall Donegal Towns & Villages – Contract No. 3 Kilmacrennan, Carrigart and Mountcharles Sewage Scheme.
There were three main areas of construction works associated with the Mountcharles WwTP project, pipe laying along Station Road, to the southwest of the village, the upgrade works to the Mountcharles WwTP and finally the new rising main running along the line of the existing N56 Donegal to Killybegs road.
In the case of the N56 rising main and the upgrade works within the Mountcharles WwTP compound, previous construction works had significantly disturbed the ground to such an extent that no surviving archaeological deposits were possible. The new connector pipeline to the Mountcharles WwTP ran across undisturbed greenfield, but monitoring did not uncover anything of archaeological sifnificance.
Finally pipeline laying works from the village south to the existing Hall Demesne WwTP were monitored. However the mixture of open-cut trenching and directional drilling did not uncover anything of archaeological significance.
