2025:354 - Coolfadda, Bandon, Cork

Archaeological testing at the site at Coolfadda was carried out on 22 and 23 September 2025. Twelve test trenches with a total length of 705m were excavated within the field. Natural subsoil and bedrock were found between 0.01m and 0.55m below surface level.
Test trenches included those that were placed to target anomalies identified from a geophysical survey; these were found to relate to areas of root burning and drainage. Field boundaries that were depicted on the historic OS maps were identified and investigated; these were shallow due to the bedrock in the area, which was generally close to the surface. Agricultural furrows running parallel to these field boundaries were identified in most of the trenches; these had been identified from the geophysical survey.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the testing programme.
