Archaeological monitoring for a new housing development was conducted intermittently over three weeks in February 2025 in the townland of Farranstig, Whitechurch, Co. Cork.
An area measuring approx. 1.5ha was stripped of topsoil. A considerable amount of introduced building rubble and modern rubbish was recorded to the north of the site, at the crest of a small hill, spread over an area measuring approx. 0.26ha, thinning downslope to the south. The material was likely levelled into this area of the field during the construction of the nearby housing estate. The footprint of several new houses (referred to as Blocks C-F) were monitored for archaeological material but no such remains were recorded.
Further south, the only significant feature recorded was a single, shallow pit filled with large fragments of fire-cracked stone and charcoal-enriched silt. This isolated feature was fully excavated and no finds were recovered.
No other archaeological features, deposits or finds were found in the course of the monitoring.
