The site at Seven Mile Straight, Ballytweedy, Co Antrim, is located some 5.5 km southeast of Antrim town. The development consists of the erection of dwelling and attached garage with associated hard and soft landscaping (change of house type from previous approval).
The planning permission for a change in house type had a number of archaeologically related conditions including the erection of a stock-proof fence around the scheduled monument ANT055:035, the precise line of which to be agreed on site with Historic Environment Division.
Substantial preparatory ground works had already taken place on foot of the original permission. However some construction works associated with the installation of a domestic sewage system remain to be undertaken in an area of the site less impacted upon by the earlier ground works and it was proposed to excavate these works under licensed archaeological supervision.
The archaeological works associated with Ballytweedy Site 5, consisted of protective works around the scheduled rath ANT055:035 and archaeological testing of a proposed sewer line at the house.
The fencing works were undertaken to the satisfaction of HED and nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered in the testing of the sewer line.
