On-going archaeological monitoring of an Uisce Éireann project is taking place at Cathal Brugha Street, McCann Street and Lacey Square, Cashel. The project entails installation of 606m of 125mm OD HDPE mains and 197m of 90mm OD HDPE mains in the public footpaths and road in residential estates.
The works involved excavation of thirteen pits to provide access and drilling points to core between each pipe and insert the water duct. The pits, which varied from 1.4m by 1m and 1m in depth to 4m by 2.2m and 1.2m in depth, were mechanically excavated. Depending on their location, whether on the footpath or road, their upper strata comprised either concrete or tarmac surfaces. It was found the underlying stratigraphy consisted of sand and rubble to stone chip bedding, beneath which was the natural subsoil. This varied from an orange silty sand to a yellow silty clay with limestone inclusions.
No archaeology or any aspect of cultural heritage, whether artefacts, deposits of structures, was encountered through the works.
The works are scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
