An application was made for full planning permission to construct a 22m by 40m synthetically surfaced sport pitch, erection of sport fencing with netting and all ancillary site development works at Kiltrustan National School, Kiltrustan, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.
As the proposed development site was partly within the zone of archaeological potential established around RO023-078001- Church and RO023- 078002- Graveyard, The Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage (DHLGH) recommended that predevelopment testing should be carried out.
The archaeological investigations across the site, which took place on 31 October 2024, consisted of one long test trench and the excavation of four test pits, and proved that modern made ground exists to a depth of over 500mm, and probably substantially deeper, right across the entire development area. Construction works associated with the proposed synthetically surfaced sport pitch, erection of sport fencing with netting and all associated drainage works will be contained within the 500mm of made ground with no disturbance proposed below this level. Consequently there will be no possible archaeological impacts associated with the development.
