Archaeological testing was undertaken by Denis Shine, assisted by supervisor/surveyor Richard Reid on 20 December 2024 in response to a further information request for a planning application for a proposed development in Clondallow Townland, County Offaly.
A total of 11 test trenches were mechanically excavated and archaeologically monitored, amounting to a total of 496.7 linear meters. These trenches had been surveyed in place on the previous day, in accordance with the excavation methodology, to include c. eight 60m trenches and three 20m trenches. Two of these trenches were subsequently shortened a little to avoid excavating underneath overhead power lines. Testing was undertaken by a mechanical 13 tonne tracked digger fitted with a 2m wide ditching bucket. Non-natural features were recorded, and soil conditions noted.
No features of archaeological significance were noted. Considering both the absence of recorded archaeological deposits, and the negligible to zero ground disturbance of the proposed development, no further archaeological mitigation was recommended for the site.
