Archaeological assessment of this site involved the excavation of 4 test trenches. An analysis of aerial imagery indicates that the site had been significantly disturbed during the construction of a retail park and adjacent roads, and the testing confirmed this. The sod/topsoil was shallow and non-existent in parts and overlay a deep fill of brown sandy clay mixed with gravel and stone throughout that ranged in depth from 0.5m to 1.1m. It was deepest at the north of the site and shallowest to the east and south. The natural comprised a compacted stony grey/brown subsoil across most of the site and varied to a yellow/grey sticky boulder clay with lots of decayed stone at the east of the site. Evidence of the compound visible on aerial imagery was encountered in the northeast of the site. A late 19th- or early 20th-century east-west field boundary ditch visible on the 3rd edition OS 25-inch map was detected in Trench 1 to the northwest of the site.
No deposits, features or finds of an archaeological nature were exposed.
The proposed development will not have any archaeological impact and should proceed as planned. No further mitigation is recommended.
