The archaeological monitoring of fourteen pits and three filtration pits in the townlands of Lakeland Lower, Manulla, Skidderagh, Creaghanboy, Drumnaslooeen and Carrowntober Oughter in County Mayo was undertaken over a period of 8 days from 10 December 2024. Nothing of archaeologcal significance was encountered in the course of monitoring with natural ground below topsoil/peat in the majority of pits excavated.
The general stratigraphy indicated sod and peaty topsoil over silty clay. Disturbed layers below topsoil was encountered in TP02, TP03. TO04 and TP07 with the remainder of the pits recording natural layers below the topsoil. Peat was encoutered in a number of pits with a maximum depth of 0.9-1m. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the trenches excavated. A possible fulacht fiadh was identified to the west of TP 11 at ITM 522731 786585. It consisted of a cresent-shaped feature 10m x 4m and c. 0.7-0.8m in height.
