A programme of Archaeological Monitoring of the excavation of a foundation trench associated with the installation of an Electricity Pole was undertaken at Ardgoul North, Co. Limerick. The pole was located within the RMP Zone established with respect to a Ringfort – rath (SMR No: LI020-051; Ardgoul South). The monument, depicted as an embanked semi-circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on the south-east side of south-west/north-east orientated field/townland on 1841 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled; no trace of monument was evident when inspected by ASI. The pole to be replaced was positioned approximately 20m from the closest extent of the monument, as depicted on the OS map of 1841.

Notification of the works was submitted to the National Monuments Service, as required under Section 12(3) of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, who recommended that all ground disturbance associated with the works be monitored by an archaeologist and under licence from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

No subsurface features of archaeological interest or potential were uncovered by the excavations; likewise, no artefacts of archaeological or historical interest were recovered.
