The works involved the archaeological monitoring of the Limerick Way Finding and Signage Project in Limerick City. A total of 31 signpost pits were excavated within and around the historic town LI005-017—-, Limerick.

Of the 31 monitored signpost pits that were excavated, 28 revealed no archaeological features or deposits. Two signpost pits (SL16 and SL41) uncovered underground cellars. Upon their discovery, all excavation work was immediately halted to prevent further damage to the cellars.

Signpost pit SL06 was located approximately 5m east of the 2013 excavation conducted by Aegis Archaeology under Ministerial Consent C000614 and Registration No. E004546, which uncovered several human burials along Nicholas Street. Within this pit, a layer covered by plastic was encountered. Disarticulated bone and charcoal were visible on the surface of this layer. Following consultation with the LCCC Archaeologist, it was agreed that the potential for uncovering human remains warranted precautionary action. As a result, this signpost (SL06) was relocated to an area in front of King John’s Castle (LI005-017014—-).

No other archaeological features were uncovered during the monitoring works.

The development had no direct or indirect impacts on the archaeological features or deposits described in this report, and no further archaeological works in respect to the scope of this project are required.
