Test trenching was carried out between 6–10 December 2024 in the townlands of Abbeyfeale East, Dromtrasna (Collins) and Dromtrasna (Hartnett) on behalf of Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) in advance of the N21 Abbeyfeale Road Scheme. The archaeological testing was undertaken as part of the Phase 3 Design and Environmental Evaluation associated with the reduced corridor for the scheme. The testing comprised six test trenches (131 linear metres) at five locations to ground-truth the results of a geophysical survey of the proposed route carried out by AMS between April and September 2023. One trench was excavated to investigate local folklore regarding the presence of a possible famine grave. Testing identified nothing of archaeological significance with only a series of field drains and a field ditch identified.
