This test excavation was undertaken in advance of a proposed development at Basin View, Dublin 8. It follows the preliminary Archaeological Impact Assessment undertaken by John Purcell Archaeology Consultancy in June 2024. Test excavation was undertaken on 14 to 16 January 2024.
A total of 83 linear meters of test trenches were mechanically excavated across the site under constant archaeological supervision during the test excavations. Natural subsoil was not exposed in the course of the excavations.
Six sections of the City Basin wall were exposed along with a brick built culvert. The locations of the identified City Basin Wall are as follows:
- Trench 1: 713834, 733645
- Trench 4: 713760, 733780
- Trench 5: 713753, 733779
- Trench 6: 713745, 733760
- Trench 7: 713757, 733719
- Trench 8: 713780, 733650
In addition to the Basin wall, a brick-built culvert was identified to the north of the site in Trench 4. It is likely a surface water sewer of 18th– or 19th-century date. The culvert was not disturbed or breached during the test excavation and it is not known if it is still in use. The Basin wall is preserved under a modern embankment at the north and west of the site, including a possible entrance area opposite the gate to Oisin Kelly Park. It is probable that the wall has been much disturbed along its eastern side where the flats complex has been constructed. Nonetheless, the wall, where it does survive, is located c. 0.2–0.3m below the existing ground surface.
