2024:798 - 109 James Street, Dublin (former post office), Dublin

The archaeological programme of site works was carried out by Aisling Collins, Jackie McDermott, Kevin Weldon and Peter Dodd.  These works commenced in June 2023 and continued intermittingly until completion in September 2024.

The earliest feature identified was part of a medieval ditch which survived close to the northern side of present-day James Street. This may have demarcated the southern limit of the medieval road of James Street (Slige Mhor).

The first major phase of development on the site was in the early to mid-18^th century when the original property plots and buildings were laid out. In the later 18^th to early 19^th century, the site was further developed and consisted of 2 property plots with new buildings along the James Street frontage.

The third phase of development was from the late 19^th to early 20^th century when the site was built over with the construction of the original post office (1892) and the western extension to the post office (c.1930s).
