An Archaeological Impact Assessment was undertaken of lands at Oldtown House, Kilgobbin, Dublin 18. The report forms part of the planning application for a proposed residential development. Within the proposed development area, there is an inn site (DU025-017002) established around 1690, which was later incorporated into a residence called Oldtown House (a protected structure, RPS 1700). To the south of the house are the ruins of outbuildings or stables, and a kitchen garden likely to be associated with the inn site. A geophysical survey (23R0320) of the proposed development area did not reveal any notable features of archaeological potential or interest.
Eleven trenches, all measuring 1.9m in width, were opened across the site. Anomalies identified during the geophysical survey were identified as isolated granite boulders. The trenches targeted the geophysical survey results and the general layout of the proposed development. The natural subsoil generally comprised a loose-moderately compact, light brown/rusty silty clay with a moderate stone content, including flecks of decayed stone, and occasional granite boulders. No features of archaeological interest were identified in the trenches opened.
