Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 12 and 13 August 2024, relating to minor drainage works to rectify an issue with standing water in a recently constructed housing development. The works were carried out in the vicinity of a water mill (DU011–145), which has been preserved in situ within a green space within the overall development.
Two drainage channels with offsets were excavated under archaeological supervision using an 8-tonne tracked excavator fitted with a 0.6m wide flat bucket. They were were positioned as far as possible from the location of the watermill site.
No features, finds or deposits of an archaeological nature were identified within the drainage trenches.
The remainder of the development area was previously archaeologically monitored in 2022 and two small sites comprising a small early medieval ditched enclosure and a late Bronze Age burnt spread identified during that monitoring were fully excavated in January-February 2023.
