A survey of Shankill Castle following the archaeologically-monitored removal of vegetation was funded by the Community Monuments Fund (CMF24-2-DR001). This concluded that Shankill Castle is not a tower-house, and is instead a two-storey small residential or manorial castle with exterior first floor entrance directly comparable to Kilgobbin Castle, and perhaps Kindlestown Castle. Much of the surviving fabric is likely to date to the c. 15th century, though this dating is very uncertain and Shankill was certainly the site of a castle in the 13th century. The castle is heavily altered, with large ovens installed in the 19th century. Further work, specifically on the area around the castle, is recommended.
