Monitoring of topsoil removal was a required after planning was approved for a small housing development at Coolduff, Kilmurry, under a reactivated licence. A geophysical survey and two phases of test excavation had been previously carried out at the site due to the presence of a souterrain (CO083-055001) on the northern boundary of the development. The required buffer zone around the souterrain was put in place before the development work began.
Topsoil removal, using a digger and bulldozer, was monitored on 30 and 31 May, 2024. Between 0.2m and 0.4m of a mid-brown loamy topsoil overlay an orange boulder clay and occasional ridges of bedrock. No archaeology was found.
