Archaeological testing of the site of a proposed development at Grange, Ovens, County Cork was undertaken in March 2024 and followed a geophysical survey which was undertaken in January 2024 (Detection Device Licence 24R0007).
The testing programme, which targeted geophysical anomalies and random portions of site, entailed the excavation of 22 archaeological test trenches, totalling 895m in length, across the footprint of proposed development site. Testing revealed a relatively consistent sub-stratum across the entirety of the development site and all but one of the test trenches were devoid of features of archaeological potential.
Potential archaeological activity was revealed within Trench 10, which was in the easternmost portion of the subject lands. The three potential features which were uncovered within this trench comprised a large sub-circular pit, a small possible post-hole and a linear feature with a charcoal-rich fill which contained a number of cremated bone fragments.
Should the development proceed, it has been recommended that these features be subject to archaeological excavation.
