Archaeological Assessment was undertaken at Ballintemple NS, Knockrea, Cork City. The geophysical survey (24R0015) was undertaken by B. Korfanty in January 2024 and test excavation was undertaken on 4 April 2024.
A total of 3 trenches were excavated across the site totalling 166 linear metres. Trenches were placed to target anomalies recorded in the course of the geophysical survey.
Across the site topsoil was recorded as a humic dark brown silty clay. The topsoil was deeper in the northernmost portion of the site measuring 0.5-0.7m and less deep in the mid- and southern sections, 0.3-0.5m. Subsoil was uniform across the site and was recorded as a dark brown silty clay with occasional gravel-sized stones.
No buried sites, features, layers or objects of archaeological potential were noted in the course of the test excavations.
