A programme of Archaeological Monitoring of topsoil stripping/general site preparation works was undertaken with respect to a residential development (‘Brenshade’) on lands located to the west and north of Church View Estate, Nurney, Co. Kildare.

There are no previously identified Recorded Monuments located within the subject development lands and no surface traces of archaeological potential were noted as a result of an examination of historic cartographic and aerial photographic material, or by subsequent surface reconnaissance surveys. The western area of the site is located within the RMP Zone/SMR Zone of Notification associated with a Castle (unclassified) – KD027-028, the site of which is positioned to the west of the subject site and for which no extant or surface traces are evident.

All topsoil stripping/general site preparation works required of the development was monitored. The topsoil was removed by machine fitted with a toothless grading bucket.

The topsoil, which was up to 340mm in depth/thickness, lay directly upon subsoil; the latter was removed to shallow depths in places as a matter of precaution.

No subsurface features of archaeological potential interest were uncovered during the course of the monitoring and no artefacts of archaeological or historical interest were recovered.
