2023:861 - Longford, Galway

The archaeological testing was completed in November 2023. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the trenches excavated. The stratigraphy throughout the site varied with sandy silt below sod in the area to the northwest of the castle but elsewhere a thin layer of topsoil or peat overlay natural silt, peat and stone. In Trench 1 undulating ground may indicate agricultural activity in the form of furrows. The wet nature of the majority of the site and the varying strata must be responsible for many of the positive anomalies identified in the geophysical survey. Two clay drainage pipes identified in the west of the site may also be responsible for positive anomalies.
