Excavation at Ringaskiddy 1, as part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Project, Co. Cork, revealed prehistoric, post-medieval and early modern activity at Ballinimlagh 4.
Stage (iv) post-excavation analysis is still pending. Below is a preliminary bulletin.
The site was made up of four principal cuttings (A-D). Prehistoric activity was evidenced by remnants of burnt stone spreads in Areas C and D (ii), the latter with an associated trough. A post-medieval agricultural landscape was evidenced by a series of shallow field boundary ditches along with a more modern trackway. One currently undated pit containing metallurgical waste was also recorded.
A total of 15 artefacts were recovered during the excavation, consisting primarily of post-medieval pottery sherds from the topsoil, with a pewter button also recovered from the base of the trackway. Archaeological materials in the form of charred plant remains (charcoal, both oak and non-oak) were also recovered.
