A programme of Archaeological Monitoring was undertaken with respect to excavations associated with the replacement of a 110kV Electrical Supply Double Pole Set at Drumyouth, Arvagh, Co. Cavan.
The existing electricity supply poles are positioned within a Ringfort – rath (SMR No: CV024-029), which is subject to statutory protection in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP).
Notification of the works was submitted to the National Monuments Service who recommended that all ground disturbance associated with the works be monitored by an archaeologist and under licence from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Removal of the topsoil (surface extents: 1.1m x 2.3m & 1.75m x 2.5m) revealed the surface as a moderately compact mixed clay deposit, which upon excavation, proved to be the backfill of the original pole foundation trenches; this material extended beyond the lateral extents of the present foundations, which were 0.7m wide, indicating that more extensive disturbance was undertaken when the original poles were erected.
Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered by the works, which included the raking-over of the topsoil.
