A programme of Archaeological Monitoring was undertaken of the foundation trench associated with the installation of a stay block and rod to an existing electricity supply pole at Ballyboggan, Co. Meath

The subject works were positioned within a Zone of Archaeological Notification established with respect to a Field System (SMR: ME046-017), an Abbey (SMR: ME046-018) and Graveyard (SMR: ME046-018001) – which is subject to statutory protection in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP).

Notification of the works was submitted to the National Monuments Service who recommended that all ground disturbance associated with the works be monitored by an archaeologist and under licence from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The trench has surface measurements of approximately 1.5m x 0.5m and had a maximum depth of 1.5m.

The topsoil comprised moderately loose and dry orange/brown sandy clay with moderate pebbles and small-medium cobbles dispersed randomly throughout: this had a maximum depth of 0.3m. The topsoil lay directly upon the subsoil, comprising dry, moderately stiff, grey gravelly/sandy clay with moderate cobbles and small dispersed randomly throughout.

Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered by the works.
