A programme of Archaeological Monitoring was undertaken with respect to the excavations of foundation pits/trenches associated with the erection of a replacement electricity supply pole installation of a replacement support stay at Aghanageeragh & Lissaghanedan Tds, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford.
The subject works were located within a Zone of Archaeological Notification established with respect to a Ringfort – rath (SMR No: LF014-111) and within the interior area of the monument.
Notification of the works was submitted to the National Monuments Service who recommended that all ground disturbance associated with the works be monitored by an archaeologist and under licence from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The pole foundation trench had surface measurements of approximately 1.8m x 0.4m and a maximum depth of 2.2m; that for the stay measured 0.5m in width and 1.6m in length. In both cases, the topsoil comprised moderately loose, light brown sandy, silty clay with moderate pebbles; this had a maximum depth of 0.23m. The topsoil lay directly upon the subsoil, comprising, stiff, light grey/brown slightly gravelly/sandy clay with moderate medium cobbles dispersed randomly throughout.
Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered by the works.
