A limited programme of archaeological testing was undertaken in advance of the construction of nineteen dwelling houses at Killaspugbrone, Strandhill Road, County Sligo. The housing development, which has obtained planning permission, is c. 45m to the north-west of a D-shaped enclosure (SL014-069).
An Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA), including a Geophysical Survey, was undertaken in late 2019 for the new development. Ten years previously a comprehensive programme of licensed archaeological testing was undertaken with in excess of 500m of test trenches opened, revealing no archaeological features/remains. As part of the 2019 AIA a Geophysical Survey was commissioned, which revealed two small isolated anomalies (Item Nos 1 & 2). As a follow on to the Geophysical Survey, two test trenches were opened to investigate the nature and provenance of these two anomalies. One of the anomalies proved to be a modern pit. Regarding the two small responses identified as anomaly No. 2, there were no traces in any form, either of antiquity or modern date. It is considered such responses were of a geological nature.
