A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken at the former Irish Glass Bottle (IGB) & Fabrizia Site, ahead of the proposed residential and mixed-use scheme, at Pembroke Quarter (Phase 1) Poolbeg West, Dublin 4.
Monitoring of ground disturbance works concentrated on the excavation of three trial holes in the areas where Japanese Knotweed was present, in order to ascertain the depth of the plants’ roots. The maximum depth of the trials holes was 3m. No archaeological finds or features were observed within the trial holes, with significant amounts of disturbance observed within the stratigraphic layers.
The site’s previous use as a land fill was made evident with the boring of the three trial holes which revealed that under a layer of topsoil (c. 0.3m) lay a substantial deposit of modern rubbish and rubble. This layer extending for approximately 1.7–2.7m in depth, continuing to the final depth of the trial holes.
Due to the disturbed nature of the site, no archaeological finds or features were observed during the monitoring efforts.
