Archaeological excavations and monitoring of Site Inspection (SI) trial pits were undertaken at a proposed residential development, which is located within the townlands of Delgany and Kindlestown Upper, Co. Wicklow. The proposed development is located c.30m south of Kindlestown castle and bawn, which is a National Monument, Recorded Monument and a Protected Structure (Nat. Mon. No. 323, SMR WI008-017/001, RPS No. 08-21). Excavation followed on from an impact assessment carried out by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (IAC) in 2018, which included a programme of test trenching (licence 18E0586).

A single archaeological feature was identified during testing and was provisionally interpreted as a kiln. Upon excavation the feature was recorded as a small pit with metalworking waste inclusions but no evidence of in situ burning. No further features were identified within the 10m x 10m excavation area.

Monitoring of nine site inspection (SI) trial pits and two percolation test pits across the development site revealed nothing of archaeological significance.

Post-excavation analyses are ongoing and a final report, including specialist information on dating and the metalworking waste, is forthcoming.
