2019:686 - KILLEGLAND, Ashbourne, Meath

Archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping and all ground works was carried out at Killegland, Ashbourne, Co. Meath. The programme of monitoring further confirmed the results of the earlier test trenching (17E0335). The site has been subjected to high levels of ground disturbance, with clear evidence within the soil profile suggesting that the site was stripped of topsoil and imported material was introduced across the site. This imported material ranged in depth between c. 0.36–0.8m, and up to 1.2m alongside the bank of the river and exposed natural bolder clay. The imported material generally consisted of a mix of builder’s rubble and waste materials associated with construction such as concrete and broken tarmac. This material appears to have been levelled across the site and a thin layer of topsoil was introduced, with an average depth of 0.15m.

The investigation exposed no archaeological features, structures, deposits or finds. The work is now complete and no further archaeological work is recommended.
