Monitoring of water main rehabilitation work in the Zone of Archaeological Potential of Belvelly Tower House (CO075-030—-) was monitored on 30–31 May 2019.
The method of operation used to lay the new water main was to dig drilling holes (DH) at intervals. The drilling machine would then drill to the location of the next drilling hole. Water was used as a lubricant for the auger head. The direction of travel of the auger head could be altered underground by small increments to place it in the desired location. The drilling holes were on average 1m wide by 3.2m long by 1.3m deep.
A total of six drilling pits were monitored, only one of these, DH 4, was within the Zone of Archaeological Potential associated with Belvelly Castle.
Excavated material consisted a mixture of brown and grey silty clays, and limestone bedrock.
No archaeological finds or materials were uncovered during monitoring works.
