The site is located immediately adjacent to Simmonscourt Castle (DU018-06301) and Gatehouse (DU018-06302). An archaeological Assessment was carried out by Donald Murphy of ACSU in January 2013. This was undertaken in the form of a desktop survey which involved researching the history of the site and an examination of available cartographic sources in an attempt to trace the site’s development. Testing was carried out in compliance with a request for further information issued by Dublin City Council and was carried out on 6 March 2017.
Due to site conditions, it was agreed with Dublin City Council to excavate a single trench outside the upstanding block-built structure. This trench revealed the presence of a compact layer of brown loam and stone and concrete rubble extending to a depth of 0.56m above a layer of brown gravelly loam garden soil. The garden soil measured 0.34m in thickness and lay directly above the natural orange clay and gravels. No archaeological features or deposits were identified and no finds were recovered.
