Monitoring was undertaken during May 2011 to enable works relating to the construction of a new access gate to the Nuns’ Chapel at Clonmacnoise. The new gateway will replace the existing gate to the south-west of the Nuns’ Chapel. Two limestone piers are required for the new gateway. Each pier required the hand excavation of a foundation pit, measuring 0.6m2 by 0.45m in depth. Monitoring of these excavations did not reveal any archaeological deposits or finds.
