Pre-development testing was carried out as part of an archaeological impact assessment requested as further information due to the scale of the development at Shanacloon, Kilgobnet, Killarney. No known archaeological monuments were located on or adjacent to the site. Test excavations were undertaken by Isabel Bennett in a nearby site ahead of development works in 2005 (Excavations 2005, No. 690, 05E1311), but no features of potential archaeological importance were recorded.
Ten test-trenches were excavated at 10m intervals, 40–80m long by 2m wide by 0.3–0.5m deep. One potential archaeological feature was tested in Trench 2. It was composed of a charcoal-rich deposit, oval in plan, orientated north–south and truncated by roots from the adjacent field boundary. The deposit was 1.65m by 0.93m by 0.04m deep. There was no formal nature to the deposit, no artefacts were recorded and it was considered not to be of archaeological significance.
