Monitoring of controlled demolition and primary ground-reduction works was undertaken during April 2009 in relation to a proposed development site located at Nos 2–4 Waterloo Street, Derry. Demolition works exposed a substantial portion of the Derry city walls (LDY014–033), while monitoring of the excavation of foundation trenches for ring-beam foundations primarily revealed layers associated with the construction of the buildings which most recently occupied the site. Monitoring also revealed a substantial subsoil-cut hole that is likely to represent an unfinished well, c. 1.8m in diameter and 10m deep, below the floor levels of the previously extant buildings.
