Moore Marine Services was commissioned by Murnane & O’Shea Ltd to provide monitoring and dive inspection services at the site of the treated effluent outfall at The Narrows, Bantry Bay, Co. Cork. Monitoring of the excavation of the 210m long, 2m wide and 2.5m deep outfall trench was conducted from 16 February until 22 April 2009.

Initially, the excavated material was composed of large, sub-rounded cobbles and boulders. This material was deposited in the west of the trench. As works proceeded and depth increased, the spoil became finer in composition. Consequently it became necessary to deposit the spoil to the north-east of the trench to minimise backfill caused by the prevailing south-westerly winds and strong tides in the area.

The programme of monitoring did not record the presence of any potential archaeological material on the site.
