2008:056 - CROSSMAGLEN: Newry Road, Armagh

The archaeological material consisted of three features which were identified during monitoring. These were a linear feature truncated at the south-western end by a modern quarry and a subcircular pit cut by a drain along its northern edge. The three features all appear to be part of the agricultural past of the area, relating to the late 17th or early 18th century. The linear feature and pit appear to form a clean water collection system which would have provided a source of clean water for animals on-site. It is likely that the drain was part of a drainage or field boundary system associated with the agricultural landscape. These three features have now been fully excavated, leaving the area which has been archaeologically monitored free for development.
