Trial-trenching was carried out on the line of the upgraded A4, between 26401 35678 and 26411 35681, in June 2006 under licence AE/06/105, followed by two phases of excavation between October 2006 and July 2007 under licence AE/06/278. The site is on a prominent hill, adjacent to an earthwork recorded as a ringfort in the SMR. Features of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date included: an urned cremation burial and several pits containing cremation-related deposits; a burnt spread associated with a rectangular trough and two large pits; and remains of at least three structures comprising ring-gullies and post-holes. Three large ditches remain undated but are possibly related to the prehistoric activity. Excavation immediately adjacent to the supposed ringfort did not reveal any evidence for early medieval activity.
