Monitoring of the installation of a footpath between the ‘Sheep Gate’ (ME036–023) and ‘Yellow Steeple’ (ME036–021) within the confines of the original medieval town (ME036–048) was undertaken over two days on 12 and 15 of November 2007. Footpath 1 was 52.5m in length and c. 1.6m in width and connected the existing tourist trails with the ‘Sheep Gate’. The second footpath was 147.5m in length and 1.6m in width. This connected the ‘Sheep Gate’ with the ‘Yellow Steeple’. An additional 67m was also excavated under supervision and later backfilled. In general the excavation consisted only of the stripping of sod to an average depth of 0.05–0.1m.

Some gravel patches were encountered during monitoring which are likely to correspond with the pathway as indicated on the first-edition 6-inch OS map. This is shown as running from the ‘Sheep Gate’ toward Nangle’s Castle (ME036–022) and follows the same approximate line as the new footpath.
