Monitoring of ground reduction in preparation for piling was carried out at a development site at Nos 31–36 Ormond Quay, Upper/Charles Street West, during November and early December 2007. A previous test excavation had been carried out at the site by Helen Kehoe (Excavations 1999, No. 222, 99E0126) and also monitoring of geotechnical investigations was carried out by Melanie McQuade (Excavations 2004, No. 569). The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Dublin, located to the south of the medieval suburb of Oxmantown and just east of the confluence of the rivers Liffey and Bradogue, in an area known into the 18th century as ‘The Pill’.

The upper levels of the site were characterised by formed concrete basements in the northern half of the site, with 18th- to 19th-century structural remains present in the southern half.

Further investigations will be undertaken in early 2008 once the piling programme has been completed.
