Twelve test-trenches were excavated at this proposed development site. Part of the site is located within the zone of potential of a ringfort (CO051–137), which is located in the north-east corner of the site. The stratigraphy in the trenches consisted generally of mid-brown stony topsoil, 0.2–0.3m deep, over orange/brown to yellow/grey clay subsoil. There was evidence for plough furrows in the east of the site in the area closest to the ringfort. No features of archaeological significance were recorded in that area. East/west field drains were present in much of the eastern part of the site. Rubble and a possible boundary wall, probably associated with an RIC barracks shown on OS maps, were recorded near the west site boundary. The ringfort will not be affected by the proposed development.
