A programme of testing was undertaken within and adjacent to the grounds of Mallow Castle, which is a national monument, as part of works associated with the Munster Blackwater River (Mallow) drainage scheme. Test-trenching took place on 4 May 2007. This was carried out using a JCB excavator with a flat, toothless bucket. Two trenches and five pits were investigated across the test area. The tested area consisted of layers of possible alluvial clay from the nearby river, with modern stone rubble, plastic and metal dumped on top of it; this in turn was sealed by a compacted clay, which lay beneath the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered during this programme of works.
