Two test-trenches were excavated at the rear of 12–13 William Street South prior to the construction of a new extension in this area. The remains of a stone wall extended across the site on a north–south axis, parallel with the Georgian street façade and the original back wall of the Georgian house. This wall is shown on the 1838 OS map and could be associated with a feature helpfully labelled ‘pump’ on the 1838 map and it is possible that a red-brick wall that was also uncovered could be associated with this feature too, as it is also possibly indicated on the 1838 OS map. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the programme of testing.
