Testing was carried out in advance of the development of a proposed hotel at the site of Rath, Cookstown, Co. Meath. The work took place between 23 and 25 May 2005, with additional trenches being excavated on 31 May and 1 June. The assessment of the site involved the mechanical excavation of fourteen test-trenches. These were excavated with a 2m-wide toothless ditching bucket until either subsoil or the top of archaeological deposits were uncovered.

One archaeological site was identified during this test excavation. This consisted of a small spread of burnt-mound material and an episode of oxidisation, four pits and three ditches, which more than likely represented relict field boundaries. Archaeological resolution of this site took place in June 2005 under licence number 05E0715 (see No. 1233, Excavations 2005).
