2005:1076 - DUNLEER: Main Street Upper, Louth

The site is located in Upper Main Street, Dunleer, on the site of Bannon’s public house. A number of 18th-century outbuildings to the rear were demolished prior to testing. The site lies in the zone of archaeological potential for Dunleer.

No test-trenches were excavated within the proposed development. It became apparent following demolition and clearance of the structures to the rear of the public house that the original height of the site was higher and partially sloped towards Main Street to the east. During construction of the various outbuildings in the 18th century, the ground level was reduced significantly by a depth of c. 2m and all construction took place directly upon the natural gravel and sand. The rear boundary wall and the outbuildings to the west were clearly constructed upon the natural gravel and sand. No archaeological features or deposits were visible and no finds were recovered.
