Dublin Bus proposes to construct a new bus depot at Harristown. This large wedge-shaped site will include an administration building, garages, parking facilities for both buses and staff parking. A fuel depot will also be constructed to the east of the administration building. A stream bounded the site to the south-west.
Harristown is an area of both archaeological and historical importance, with an un-located dwelling and an enclosure site listed in the RMP. A third group of sites, a church, castle and mill, not included in the RMP, is mentioned in the documentary sources.
Monitoring was carried out on 5–14 August 2003. Topsoil-stripping was carried out using a mechanical digger with a toothless bucket and a medium-sized bulldozer. A small area of archaeological potential was identified and excavated; the area was deemed to be of no archaeological significance.
Editor’s note: Though carried out in 2003, this summary was received too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
