Testing at the site of a proposed development at Waterloo Road, Wexford, was undertaken in November 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 1940). The site, previously part of the grounds of the Presentation Convent, is within Wexford town’s zone of archaeological potential, outside the line of the town’s medieval walls.
Testing uncovered a large ditch-like feature, first appearing at a depth in excess of 1m and extending to 2.12m below the existing ground level. It appeared to measure in excess of 1.7m in width and ran along the southern boundary of the site in an east to west or south-east to north-west direction.
Monitoring of construction-related groundworks at this site in 2004 uncovered no further archaeological features. It was possible to raft over the probable ditch and no further information regarding the feature was gathered.
