Testing took place to the rear of Roscrea Credit Union, Main Street, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, on 16 August 2004. The development plan includes the erection of a single-storey meeting/training room extension and ancillary site works. The proposed development lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Roscrea (SMR 12:10). Unauthorised works were carried out prior to archaeological consultation. The foundation trenches were excavated, concrete poured and the foundation walls were laid before work was halted and the Heritage and Planning Division of the DoEHLG was contacted. A request was made that new trenches be excavated around the unauthorised foundation trenches, because the presence of the concrete foundations meant it was not possible to examine the section faces of these trenches. Two trenches were excavated, one along the existing wall of the Credit Union and another parallel to the northern foundation trench. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during the testing.
