2004:1470 - LISNANARIAGH, Roscommon

The site of the proposed development at Lisnanariagh, Cloontuskert, is irregular in shape and overgrown with mature trees. It is very close to an earthwork that has the appearance of a large, truncated enclosure/ringfort. No evidence of any visible earthworks was identified on the site during field inspection. The missing portion of the enclosure was clearly present in the recent past and, while there is no remaining surface trace, the third-edition OS map clearly shows that the missing portion follows the line of the existing property boundary. On the author’s recommendation, the site owner agreed to move the proposed house and related aspects of the development 5m south of the proposed location. This will provide an 18m buffer zone between the proposed house and the extant earthworks and a 12m gap between the house and the approximate location of the missing earthworks. Four test-trenches were excavated in October 2004. No evidence of archaeological remains or finds was revealed in the trenches.
