Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed dwelling and associated services at Tallowroe townland, Co. Galway, was carried out on 15 December 2003. The proposed development, situated in a field of pasture and rock outcrop, was located partially within the constraint for a megalithic structure (SMR 96:164), with the proposed house 34m from the monument.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of six trenches. The trenches measured 35m, 16.1m, 8.3m, 13.5m, 19.5m and 14m long, respectively, and were 0.7–1.5m wide and 0–1.0m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil, above bedrock, orange/brown firm clay loam, orange/brown friable silt loam and grey loose sand, all sterile natural subsoils. The bedrock outcropped in places. The topsoil contained a small number of modern artefacts.
The testing revealed evidence of natural undisturbed stratigraphy only.
